what i love about you

i love you coz you are a pillar of strength for me - and although we may not grow individually as fast as we did before we got married, we grow together and make a very strong team supporting each other. sometimes, you need to ease the preasure of constantly developing yourself. You still strive to be successful in everything you do, but its nice to share this burdon with someone and succeed as a team. Having high expectations of yourself all the time can be very exhausting and can lead you into dark dark places that you may sometimes not find a way out of, but im glad that CAF is there to pull me out of deep dark places when i get lost. Some have different points of views, but i think its about how much load you can, want to and ought to carry..

i love you CAF and will cherish you till death do us part.

Hood To COAST

Well... wat a story..
At first it was go, dun go... but in the end.. i finally got to go.

Hood To Coast - or HTC - is a 12 man relay RUN covering close to 200 miles (or close to 320km). total of 36 legs split between 12 ppl (each man or woman doing 3). so 12 of us headed up to Portland, Oregen - to be exact only 9 coz 3 were alredi there. But of the 9, only 8 left on time - the last one was me... my passport is not machine readable...  -_-....

So a quick passport change at the UK Embassy - the lady was SOOO kind, so helpful and so accomodating. Much less can be said for the secrity guard who made fun of me at the US embassy and the totally unhelpful rude 'dude' in the US embassy. Not even willing to help in anyway he jus dished me one side and wasted 2 hrs of my time. b***ard.. Same goes for tat ugly fat probably impotent and in debt f***er at the US customs who made fun of me at the arrival hall -

F***er - wat are you doing here?
me - on a biz trip
F***er - with who?
me - Nike
F***er - what you do at nike?
me - Visual Merchandiser
F***er - {with a smirk on his face and slamming down my immigration form} well visualise this - you didnt fill this in correctly!!!!
me - {wat a F***KER!!!! your f***ing country is going down the toilet and you STILL dare to act like this!! no wonder you country is in shit now!!} ok - ill fill it in now, im sorri
F***er - yeah.. hehehehe.. so how much currency are you carrying on you?
me - 100USD
F***er - heheheheh, ok, here's your passport.

Ppl may think that im pathetic coz i complain so much... but wateva man.. i really didnt expect this from the great americans... bah.. PUI!! first impressions always count, they shld learn this impt lesson from places like Singapore or Germany. Look at their airports and airport service staff! Especially singapore!! on tat day i suddenly, in an arrogant way, became a bit proud i hold a BRITISH passport. a smirk of - thank god im not YOUR kind of Ang mo... a disgrace to the white society. REALLY! The 2 days of rushing around for the UK embassy, $400+ i paid out to get the new passport and all other forms.. at that moment all seemed worth it. Shame on you!! - REALLY!!

Anyway, so i left Singapore two days later putting me in Portland on Friday Morning - the day that the race started. i touched down from a 14 hr flight to jump straight into a 30hr race... =S That was hard coz i was quite mentally drained.. physically i was so high on adrenaline i cld have done a 2hr30 OD... but mentally i was so exhausted. had been staring at this super small TV screen for the past 14 hrs, in a squeezy little chair. It was quite daunting to accept the fact that i cldnt have a lie down in the beautiful bed in the hotel room, but had to spend another 30hrs in another small chair.. - the car seat that wld drive us around the race. but yeah.. so the race began. Car1 went off with 6 of us to do the first 6 legs of the relay. I was in the Car2. We wld do legs 7-12, Car 1 wld to 13-17 and so on and so on. As it neared up to my leg of the race.. the adrenaline was realyl starting to get to me.. i jus wanted to run. The avg length of a leg was bout 8km; shortest probably being about 5+ and longest being 12.5!

So the next 30 hrs were spent in the car... or running.. after our first legs 7-12, we went to GT's house to shower and get some rest and food. I totally knocked out after my leg... jus cldnt take it anymore, i think my body jus shut down - the long haul flight plus the first 11km run  had won over my adrenaline. i still remember the feeling - normaly when u close ur eyes it takes a while for ur body to relax and rest to sleeping stage - all i can remember is taking a seat in the car and when my eyes opened, our last runner had finished leg 12. I was leg 10. so at GT's house i also jus knocked out on the bed for bout 90min whereas the other didnt get any shut-eye at all - very Embarrassed, i was the only pig who was sleeping away and the others were not. I bet they were damn pissed.. Embarrassed sorri guys.. Embarrassed

But yeah.. we headed on to our second round of 6 legs - legs 18-23... OMG, we started at like... 3am. Besides the freezing cold, it was pitch black and hilly wld be an understatement.. even mountainous?? torturous wld do it.. i had all along told myself that i wasnt scared of darkness or cold.. but i was scared hills.. and boy.. did we get hills..

But all in all... it was quite fun and id def run it again. Maybe not the same legs coz actually.. i think my legs were the silent killers.. i ran a total of close to 29km.. with a difficulty rating of hard... hardest being very hard. The morning run totally killed my legs with muscles turning numb. Thank god i didnt fall sick. Amazingly, we finished in about 29hrs or was is 28hrs and 30min?? dunno, but we placed 35th out of 88 teams. I was shocked but happy and really glad i was part of the team that completed that race.

But yeah.. so the rest of the gang headed back home on the sunday after the race. Sasa said i shld stay one more day coz i arrived late and didnt really get to walk around or see anything here.. so him and i stayed another day. he drove us around, we went to the factory outlet stores and also other shopping centres here. I went half mad at the Gap Outlet - half coz i only bought TOPS.. no bottoms.. no jeans coz no SIZE!! pissed off mannn...  but other than that.. the sheer size was jus too overwhelming. i guess i was jus not in the mood to go thru 100's of shoes all stacked on a wall side by side to see wat bargains i cld pick up. Same goes for the other stores... Nike FOS was pretty disappointing as well as the legendary Employee store. Sasa took me to the Nike Campus to take a stroll around which was kinda cool. Get to see the campus that everyone talks about... (manche haben einfach noch nicht die Welt gesehen...) the pool was cool and the Tiger woods thingy as well.

So a day later, we left... on the long flight back..

Wat can i say... the race was damn fun. Thanks guys for that HUGE pack of mangoes!!! Awesome man!! haha
and thanks to Duano for letting me come on the trip in the last hr - it was truely an experience to remember =)
thanks to GT for letting us sleep in his house and the food and the shower and the 90min power nap!!!
thanks to the drivers - TS, GT and Sasa
and of course - thanks to Sasa for driving me around on the last day =)

Nicole Cooke wins Olympic GOLD!!! and thats it really..

i been watching the Olympics over this long weekend... and all i can remember is Nicole Cooke's super win during the Wmns Road Race. ya, i watched the Wmns Road Race Cycling event yesterday. The whole thing... All i can say is that thank god i had my puzzle book as a side entertainer coz the ride of the wmn was so damn boring to watch... not much on the attacking front or breakaways etc...

but before i go on and bitch... (which on 2nd thoughts i will not) - this girl Nicole (who i have no idea who she is) won the Gold Medal!! and what a win that was too. The uphill sprint to the finish with the Italian girl was truely amazing - somemore in the wet weather and slippery roads. she stayed inside the pelaton all the way untill literally the last moment. and from a momentary slip from the leaders pack she sprinted all the way up to the finish line to take the gold!!! her face is the true expression of - 'i want this more than you!!!!'

wow!!

nicole-cooke-new_788648c

a well deserved win.

but other than that.. no real momerable moments as of yet... why why why??? heard jus now on the radio that the stadiums are empty during the event coz apparantly tickets for those empty seats had been given to sponsors who eventually didnt turn up... all this bad press... oh well.. at least the brit's bagged a gold in the rain and cold =)

Oh yeah, one nice thing to watch was the Cross country equestrian. My mummy and i wld always watch the Showjumping together when we still lived under the same roof so that was nice.

i been following the olympics to try and be inspired by these great athletes and to find a way to relight my fire... but howcome all i feel is total and utter joy for the Miss Cooke and Mr Sanchez who won the Men's Road Race the day before...

Keep up the good work Nicole - im sure from here on, the road is will be a lot more adventurous and rewarding =)

What Is Running?

A while ago, one of my colleagues asked me to write an article for one of the yahoo grps on Nike+ Human Race.
Took me a while, but i tot id put it here as well - since it is taken from places deep down inside me. I think one or two ppl in this world will really understand the true meaning of what running is to me.

Love you Mum and Peter Puetz - this is for you.

What Is Running?

What a silly question one might say - "its the simple motion of placing one foot in front of another at an accelerated pace." my father wld say... But sometimes one does need to ask oneself this question, especially when you wake up religiously at 6am to spend those 30-60min on the road before the sun goes up (or down..). Why do I run and what is Running to me?

To many ppl it means different things. To your neighbour across the street it might mean his or her daily (or weekly) 30min destress and quiet time away from work and the house. To your average teenager it might be the only way she knows to get a slim figure and sexy legs. To your average guy it might be the way to show his frens that he is the fastest man around. And to some, it might even be the way to spend a quiet 30min with the one u love. It cld be an excuse to sneak around the corner to meet your boy or girlfriend, or even a safety line thrown to you to get your life back on track. Whatever it is, its by no means unique.

A friend once told me - to me running is about freedom and I will never stop doing it. i couldnt really understand that as when i think about running, the words 'fast' and 'speed' come to mind. So I thought id see what others think bout Running and googled it.

Wikipedia defines running as the following:

"Running is defined as the fastest means for an animal to move on foot.[citation needed] [...]"

As you scroll down further on the page, you see there are different kinds of running - Trail Running, Track Running, Fell Running etc... (Thats Moutain Running btw..) - and under the "See Also" section they have related topics such as Olympics, Triathlon and this thing called Persistance Hunting. Interesting I thought and clicked through.

Persistence hunting is a type of hunting where the predator uses a combination of running and tracking to pursue the prey to exhaustion. [...] Persistence hunting requires endurance running - running many miles for extended periods of time. Among primates endurance running is only seen in humans and is thought to have evolved 2 million years ago."

I suppose this wld often come to mind when faced with the Challenge of beating the likes of Mr. Bolt or Miss Marion Jones - I may never be as fast as you, but i bet I can go on for longer than you in this part of the world (hot climate etc). So I read on to the Procedure part -

"Procedure
During the persistence hunt an antelope, such as a kudu, is not shot or speared from a distance, but simply run down in the midday heat. Depending on the specific conditions, hunters of the central Kalahari will chase a kudu for about two to five hours over 25 to 35 km in temperatures of about 40 to 42°C. The hunter chases the kudu, which then runs away out of sight. [...]"

Now at the 25km to 35km part... thats where it started to hit me - I might actually have to run that long to really beat the likes of Emma Snowshill (a domineering Australian Triathlete) in a race of any distance. Sounds ridiculous but wldnt it be cool if I did all that and actually won??

I recall a conversation I had with a two colleagues. We were discussing how to beat this guy in a race of 10km who runs it in about 33min. For easy maths, we rounded up to 35min, making each km 3:30min. The conclusion was that even if the 3 of us found 7 other guys to do a 10km relay (1km each), we still wld not beat this guy. Then we thought about 21km and 42km... and so on and so on... And realised that in the end, we wld have to tie his shoe laces up to beat him and had a good laugh at our 'big dream'.

So what is running really? Is it a 'I'm better than you" Challenge or is it a simple daily 30minutes of peace and quiet before the sun goes up (or down).

Each to his own i suppose, but to me, it is a life saver which pulled me out of the pits of low self-esteem and gave me back my confidence. It shed away excess baggage and helped me turn over a new leaf. It is something that opened a new door of opportunities in life, brought my life partner and also many friends. It helped me bring competitive sport back into my life and allowed me to dream big again. I run because I want to remember the good things it did for me and how it put my life back together.

The words 'fast' and 'speed' still come to mind, but hey... thats how we define running =)  [see above]
What is Running to you?
